Community Outreach & Environmental Education Specialist

The Community Outreach & Environmental Education Specialist will be focused on implementing the MaST Center Aquarium’s public facing programs including educational outreach, informal and formal education programs, and social media. This includes an emphasis on creating and offering opportunities in formal and informal situations using a variety of modalities that take advantage of the strengths of the MaST Center Aquarium, its location on the Puget Sound, and the variety of partnerships of which the MaST Center Aquarium is involved in. Internships Available

Our internships are paid temporary work experience that help individuals gain practical knowledge and skills in a specific field or industry. The primary goal is to gain practical, real-world experience in a specific job or career. Interns develop job-related skills and expand their professional network. Internships can last from a few weeks to several months and are designed to help interns build their resumes and increase their employability.

Open to current college students and recent graduates.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Experiential Learning Opportunities provide hands-on, immersive experiences designed to deepen understanding and enhance practical skills. These opportunities allow participants to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, making learning more meaningful and impactful. By working directly with professionals, communities, or environments, learners gain valuable insights, build confidence, and develop competencies that prepare them for future careers and leadership roles.

Open to current college students and can be used for college externship/capstone project credits through various institutions.

The Research Teach will work closely with MaST staff and volunteers to conduct research on Dungeness crabs as part of a collaborative light trap sampling program. If possible, the tech will be given a leadership role in conducting sampling, quality control, and analysis. Depending on needs, the tech may assist with studies of other crab species and genetic sampling. Time commitment: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 9:00am-12:00pm. View full opportunity here.

The Marketing and Media Influencer will be focused on designing, implementing, and managing, in collaboration with MaST staff, a social media strategy that aligns with organizational and educational goals of the MaST Center Aquarium and Highline College.  Flexible part-time, with the potential to include evening and weekends. MaST Center Marine Mammal Stranding Team logoMarine Mammal Stewards Lead
The MMS Lead will Interact with Redondo Beach goers and educate them about common marine mammals. Help the public understand the difference between seals and sea lions, teach them how to spot animals from a safe distance, and give them information on how to report an injured, entangled, or dead marine mammal to the Stranding Network. Time commitment: June – September – Friday 4:30pm-7:30pm and Saturday & Sunday 9:30am-2:30pm. View full opportunity here.

Environmental Educator
The Environmental Educator will be focused on implementing the MaST Center Aquarium’s public facing programs including educational outreach, informal and formal education programs, and social media. Time commitment: Flexible part-time, includes evenings and weekends. View full opportunity here.

Aquarium Tech
Tech will primarily be working in the aquarium; performing tank maintenance, feeding, and other tasks as assigned. After learning the basic skills necessary to perform these tasks, an informal discussion with the lead aquarist may introduce other areas of animal care as time allows. Time commitment: Flexible schedule, at least 6 hours/week during business hours (Monday-Friday 9-4). Ideal schedule would be 2-3 hours/day, 2-3 hours/week. View full opportunity here.

High School Experiental Learning Opportunities

The MaST Center Aquarium does provide high school students with the Experiential Learning Opportunities at the facility. These ELOs are scheduled for Thursdays between 8am-4:30pm. If you are interested in a high school ELO at the MaST Center Aquarium, we ask that you schedule an informational interview or job shadow so that you have a better understanding of the internship duties. Please send an email stating your interest to the Community Engagement Coordinator at awauhob@highline.edu.

To apply for a high school experiential learning opportunity, please submit the following to the Community Engagement Coordinator.

Cover Letter – A 1-page letter that states why you would like an  ELO at the MaST Center Aquarium, what skills you would like to gain, and how you would support our mission.

Letter of Recommendation – A letter from a community member advocating for your character and work ethic. The Letter of Recommendation needs to be from a teacher, counselor, advisor, coach, or a community member that knows you well. Letters from parents/guardians will not be accepted.
